Sound familiar?

Everyone around you seems
to know something you don't.

You are working full time and doing a degree at the same time. Somewhere in the background is a system of off the job hours, KSBs and an end point assessment that nobody has properly explained, and a quiet worry that you might be getting it wrong.

Meanwhile the good projects keep going to someone else. You are not sure why. You work hard, you deliver, and somehow your name is not the one that comes up.

Most apprentices figure this out slowly. By accident. Over years.

01

Behind, and not sure how far

The hours you have not logged. The KSB evidence you keep meaning to write up. EPA sitting somewhere in the distance like weather.

02

Working hard, going unnoticed

The interesting work goes elsewhere. You are doing everything right and it is not translating into anything.

03

No idea what comes next

Nobody has told you what senior actually requires here, when to ask for it, or what you are worth the day you qualify.

The difference

The ones who get further are
not the ones who work hardest.

They are the ones who worked out the rules early. Which hours count and which do not. What assessors are actually looking for. How work gets handed out in the four seconds somebody spends thinking about who could do it. When to have the progression conversation, and what to say.

None of it is complicated. Almost none of it is written down anywhere.

That is the only real difference between finishing your apprenticeship as a qualified engineer and finishing it as a senior one.

What you get

Five parts. One route
from Year 1 to senior.

Everything I got wrong, worked out, and eventually got right. Written down so you do not have to spend years finding it by accident.

Who wrote this

I started with no idea
what I was doing.

Level 6 degree apprenticeship, new field, zero experience. Six years later, senior engineer.

Not because I was exceptional. Because I eventually worked out the things nobody had bothered to tell me, and I got there quicker once I did.

This is all of it. Written down properly, so you can start where it took me three years to get to.

Why this one

What makes it different

Built for the UK

Real apprenticeship standards, real ESFA rules, real EPA. Not American career advice with the spelling changed.

Works across engineering

Mechanical, electrical, civil, software, building services. The system is identical and so are the politics.

No filler

126 dense, scannable pages. Not 300 pages of one idea explained four times.

Honest about the hard bits

Being skint. Burning out. Failing a module. The post-completion cliff nobody warns you about.

Questions

Quick answers

Is this relevant to my discipline?

Yes. The system, the workplace dynamics and the progression path are the same whether you are mechanical, electrical, civil, software or building services. The examples lean engineering because that is where I came from, but the substance applies across any Level 6 technical apprenticeship.

Is it up to date?

It is written to the current UK apprenticeship standard framework and was checked against government guidance at the time of writing. Rules change, so it consistently points you at your own training provider and gov.uk for anything binding rather than asking you to take my word for it. Buyers get free updates.

Can I buy just one part?

Yes, £11.99 each. Most people start with Part II if the admin is the problem, or Part I if they have just started. The complete handbook works out cheaper than buying three parts separately.

Is this a course?

No. Downloadable PDFs. No login, no platform, no drip feed. Print them, scribble on them, keep them.

My degree is finished and I am in my EPA year.

Then Part V was written for exactly where you are standing. Most programmes separate the degree from the EPA period, and the gap between them catches almost everybody. Chapter 1 covers the post-completion cliff, why going back is harder than it sounds, and the four things that beat it. Buy Part V on its own if that is all you need.

I am in Year 4. Too late?

No, and this is the right time to read it. The progression conversation needs to happen twelve to eighteen months before you want the outcome. Parts III and V are written for exactly where you are standing.

I have not started yet.

Then you are in the best possible position. Part I is largely written for you, and knowing the mindset shift before you walk in is a genuine head start.

Start where you are.

New? Start with Part I. Drowning in admin? Part II. Working hard and going unnoticed? Part III.

Or take the lot and stop wondering what you are missing.
